RAG WEEK!!!!

Some of you may be aware that we are holding RAG (Raise and Give) Week between Monday 10th March and Friday 14th March.
This year we are supporting:
The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust
Cancer Research UK
Water Aid.



The timetable of events currently stands as:
Monday - "Brookes School Musical" Clubnight with RAG tombola/raffle.

Tuesday - RAG raid in town. Potential of busking in town for those musicians interested!

Wednesday - Novelty "Old School" Sports Day at the Sports Centre...ending up at Peachy

Thursday - Novelty SPAM with e.g. eating competition and human auction. Also, a send off party for the Brookes Jailbreak!

Friday - 9am - Jailbreak begins! Evening - RAG Rave at Pleasuredome (UV Party)
Jailbreak finishes at 9pm on Saturday evening.

I need as many volunteers as possible to make this week a success!
You can help by promoting the events, going on RAG raids with the charity pots in and around University or getting more directly involved in the events.

If any of you are keen to help run one of the events such as the sports day it would be a great help, great opportunity and look great on your CV!

Also, all the talented musicians out there - it would be absolutely fantastic if you could busk down in town to raise money. Please let me know asap if you are interested as I'll have to get a busking permit from the council.

All of these events are in aid of our RAG charities which were voted on at the Annual General Meeting last October.

Executive Officer Report - 13th February 08

To ensure the provision of financial support for those sports teams which do not currently receive support from the Sports Centre and to lobby on their behalf throughout the year.

The Sports Centre attended Refreshers’ Fair and gained a significant amount of interest which was shown by the list of contact details they obtained on the day. Hopefully this interest will turn in to actual sign ups when the students receive further information from the Sports Centre. With more students signing up and an increase of income, there will be an increase of expenditure on resources for sports teams.

The Sports Centre felt it was a success for them and are keen to attend future Freshers’ and Refreshers’ Fairs.

To arrange a RAG week either in Semester 1 or Semester 2 involving not less than 100 students as active participants and to increase the amount of money raised for charities compared to previous years.

I am currently sending out emails to get volunteers to help with this week!

RAG week will take place between Monday 10^th March and Friday 15^th March.

As I’m sure most of you are aware, the Brookes School Musical event has been postponed and will now kick RAG week off on Monday 10^th. As it is now a RAG event we will be holding a tombola which we will sell tickets for throughout the evening. I will be taking an afternoon this week to go to town to accumulate prizes from local shops and businesses.

I am going to book stalls at each of the campuses so we can hold cake sales during the daytime.

On Wednesday, the Sports Centre have agreed to let us use the astro-turf and main courts for a novelty, old school sports day. This will be open to all at a fee of £5 per team (£1 each). The sports centre will be working on increasing the participation of the sports teams. We will be encouraging students who take part in this event to carry on to Peachy in the evening where we may be able to sell lollies for a small profit.

On Thursday, SPAM has agreed to hold a novelty night with competitions such as an eating competition and a human auction. This will also be the “send off” party for students participating in the Brookes Jailbreak.

We have discussed the Jailbreak and have agreed that the morning of Friday 14^th is the best time for it to start. It would end on Saturday 15^th at 9pm. The aim is for students (in teams of at least 2) to get as far away from the Union as possible in 36 hours. We will be providing them with T-shirts and hopefully a small survival pack if we can gain enough sponsorship. The Sales and Advertising Coordinator is working on gaining sponsorship for this event.

For insurance we will be asking each student to get a European Insurance Card which is available from the Post Office for £2. Each student will receive a disclaimer from the Union regarding further insurance.

We will also send the students with a letter on SU headed note paper to prove that they are on a charity expedition and not just trying to get free lifts!

RAG week will end with a RAG Rave at Pleasuredome where we will be selling glowsticks.

To increase participation in student union activities by 20% by the end of my term of office

Refreshers’ Fair took place on Monday 4^th February. Although it was inevitably not as busy as Freshers’ Fair in the first semester it was still a successful day. We had a number of newly affiliated societies who were able to gain interest and sign up new members, increasing the number of active participants in the Union. The general flow of students through the Union throughout the day was good, with an obvious increase when Dominos brought out the free pizza!

At lunchtime there was an Open Mic (Night) Day which encouraged students to stay and sit in Harts Bar while they ate their lunch.

In the afternoon we went to Gipsy Lane to encourage students to come over to the Venue to see what was on offer. This was effective as we saw many of the students we had spoken to over at the Union.

To support the STAX project by attending at least 2 monthly meetings and working closely with Student Advice And Activities Manager on student volunteering

I attended a meeting with the Volunteer Coordinator regarding the National Student Volunteering week in March. We discussed how to increase the number of volunteers. The volunteer coordinator will be sending me an email to forward to all societies. I will also ask the other Sabbs to forward the message once I have received it.

On Monday 11^th February I am attending the “Friends of Oxford Mela Event” with the other Volunteer Coordinator. The evening will be an opportunity for people to find out about the event and how they could get involved.

REFRESHERS' FAIR

Refreshers' Fair took place in the SU Venue on Monday 4th February between 11am and 5pm.

25 Societies and 6 Commercial Companies attended and the day was a success!
The societies were all able to promote themselves and many of them signed up more members and filled places on society trips.

There was predictably a rush at lunchtime when Dominos brought out the free pizza but there was a steady stream of students throughout the day!

Union Council Report - January 08

To ensure the provision of financial support for those sports teams which do not currently receive support from the Sports Centre and to lobby on their behalf throughout the year.

The Centre for Sport will be attending Refreshers’ Fair to give information about the sports teams and promote their services, without any commercial activity of signing up members. By promoting their services they can encourage students to go over to the Centre itself to sign up to the gym and classes. The more money brought in to the Sports Centre, the more money that can be spread around the sports teams in the future.

To arrange a RAG week either in Semester 1 or Semester 2 involving not less than 100 students as active participants and to increase the amount of money raised for charities compared to previous years.

The RAG raffle for the voucher at the Living Room was small scale as it was only aimed at staff. We managed to make £30 which doesn’t sound like much but when added to money raised from the RAG pots at the shops and RAG events in the future this will help!

I am yet to meet with the student organising a Brookes “Jailbreak” to discuss how we can make it a RAG event.

Within the year arrange a showcase trip in another European country for performance societies.

Due to lack of interest in this trip and other demands on time I am currently reviewing this objective.

To provide monthly publicity of the aims and objectives of STAX

I attended a meeting on 23^rd January which Clive Robertson from the University attended. We discussed events that STAX get involved in and how they promote their services for these. It was suggested that we work closer with the local colleges in our volunteering projects as many of their students will move on to Brookes after their A-levels. STAX will have a stall at Refreshers Fair on 4^th February to promote their projects.

Open Executive Committee Report - 16th January

To ensure the provision of financial support for those sports teams which do not currently receive support from the Sports Centre and to lobby on their behalf throughout the year.

I have recently been in contact with the Director of Sport about gaining funding for individual students who are high achievers in their field and are likely to train and compete at a National level. However, it was insisted that funding would only go to students competing in Oxford Brookes’ Sports of Excellence. I was advised to speak to the University about the Scholarship and Bursary scheme to see if any funding could be provided for those students not falling within the Sports of Excellence. I am waiting on a reply.

The Administration and Personnel Manager has very kindly offered a £40 voucher for The Living Room as a raffle prize for RAG. The voucher is valid until 31^st January so the raffle will of course not coincide with RAG week. I will be selling raffle tickets this week to staff of the Students’ Union and the University. I will be selling tickets for £1 a strip so hopefully there will be enough interest to raise money for RAG!

A student has contacted me about holding a “Brookes Jailbreak” where students try to get as far away from the Union as possible in 24 hours whilst raising money along the way! We are arranging a meeting to talk about making this a RAG event with the Union supporting and publicising the event.

I will soon be publicising RAG week itself with the plan to start on Monday 10^th March if there are no objections.

To provide monthly publicity of the aims and objectives of STAX

I recently met with the Student Advice and Activities Manager about the Investing in Volunteers project. He will be the project manager and I will be the political manager. This project is still in its early stages but the plan is to assess the inner workings of STAX by following the 10 indicators supplied by the project. If these 10 indicators are met then our volunteer service has achieved the Investing in Volunteers Standard and the report will go to the UK Quality Assurance Panel for verification. The ultimate goal is to achieve the Investing in Volunteers Award and then we will be able to use the Investing in Volunteers logo with our volunteering service. There will be a reassessment after three years.

This gives you a general overview of the plan but it is looking far in to the future!
